After listening to endless other songs, last night I finally found it: "Last Train Home" by Pat Metheny Group from the 1987 album Still Life (Talking). The title is really perfect and fits the song! If anyone knows the backstory of this song or has any memories about this song, would love to hear your comments.

Gilbert Arizona. I've noticed two SACDs on Acoustic Sounds for The Pat Metheny Group, Off Ramp and The Pat Metheny Group. Other than a stiff $59.95 price I know nothing about these. Does anyone have these and per chance has anyone compared these to the early German CD releases of these albums? Label: ECM.
PAT METHENY was born in Kansas City on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age.
Blue Nile Fan Forum Resident. Location: Akron, Ohio. I would start with his solo CD "Secret Story," then move to "Offramp," "Letter from Home," and "Still Life Talking." Then on to "American Garage" and the others like "80/81" and "Bright Size Life." It's all good, although some are a bit more jazz than the others.
Welcome to csmastering – Christoph Stickel Mastering Vienna. There are new 24/96 versions of all Metheny's ECM albums (Bright Size Life, Watercolors, Pat Metheny Group, American Garage, New Chautauqua, 80/81, As Falls Wichita..., Offramp, Travels, First Circle and Rejoicing).
I was just watching the concert at Central Park with Simon & Garfunkel and I'm 99.9% sure that it is Pat Metheney who does a short solo on "American"-2/22/21. The video of the concert doesn’t include it but after the song ends on the album of the concert, Paul Simon announces, “David Brown on the guitar solo.”.
Location: USA. The final Lyle Mays album "Eberhard" released in 2021. One piece of music, in some ways this may be a homage to bassist Eberhard Weber, but this is all Lyle Mays the composer. There are flashes of the Pat Metheny Group sound, with dense orchestration, seemingly the Weber influence showing through. Beautiful music.
Pat's comments about the record at that link (translated German to English): Pat Metheny: "Dream Box is an unusual recording for me. It's a compilation of pieces I recorded over several years. During a tour last year (2022), I discovered a forgotten folder on my hard drive.
