The post office opened on May 7, 1834. The post office closed occasionally and underwent several name changes, including Nelsonville, Readingville, and ultimately Oakville until it closed permanently on February 19, 1904. The community of Readingville is historically listed as being in Washtenaw County, while Oakville is in Monroe County. [8] [9]
William Lemmon purchased the first plot of land here in 1825 when the area was still part of Wayne County in the Michigan Territory until Washtenaw County was established in 1829. Lima Township was organized in 1832, and the settlement became known as Lima Center due to its central location within the new township.
Dixboro was settled as early as 1825 by John Dix and was platted in 1826 by A. B. Rowe. The name was first recorded in 1828 at a time when the area was still administratively part of Wayne County until Washtenaw County was created in 1829. A post office opened under the name Dixborough, which was named after John Dix, on December 6, 1825.
The Nathan B. Devereaux Octagon House is one of only three extant octagonal houses in Washtenaw County, and remains in excellent and near original condition. It was built in 1864 after Nathan B.
