Francis of Paola, O.M. (also known as Francis the Fire Handler; 27 March 1416 – 2 April 1507), was a Roman Catholic friar from the town of Paola in Calabria who founded the Order of Minims. Like his patron saint ( Francis of Assisi ), but unlike the majority of founders of men's religious orders , Francis of Paola was never ordained a priest .
Francis recovered, which she believed meant that God had granted her prayer. At 13 years of age Francis fulfilled that votive year. After this year he dedicated himself to a life of solitude and penance as a hermit. [2] In 1435, two followers joined Francis and began the community, which was first called the "Poor Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi."
Other decorations inside the church include stuccoes (1705) by Biagio Bianco of Licodia, some of them gilded in the late 18th century. A reliquary made of silver was completed by Francesco Tuccio in 1726. On the right is an altarpiece by Giuseppe Reati, depicting the Miracle of St Francis of Paola (1641).
The ceiling of the sacristy was painted by Sassoferrato, with a motif of "The Blessed Virgin appearing to St Francis of Paola". On the side wall is a Crucifixion and St Francis of Paola by Francesco Cozza. By the door to the presbytery are the tombs of Lazzaro Pallavicini and Giovanni Pizzullo, both with busts by Agostino Corsini.
Seen when viewed from the left of the painting, St Francis is dressed in the habit of the order he founded and with the marks of stigmata mirroring the crucifix he holds in the same hand. Seen when viewed from the right is another St Francis – St Francis of Paola (St Francis de Paul) – wearing a cowl , and holding a paper marked CHARITAS.
A document from 1310 mentions a church or chapel at the site. It was enlarged by a confraternity of tailors in 1485.
