The O.K. Corral hearing and aftermath was the direct result of the 30-second Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, on October 26, 1881. During that confrontation, Deputy U.S. Marshal and Tombstone Town Marshal Virgil Earp, Assistant Town Marshal Morgan Earp, and temporary deputy marshals Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday shot and killed Billy Clanton, and Tom and Frank McLaury.
On Oct. 26, 1881, the Earp brothers Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan, plus Doc Holliday squared off against Ike and Billy Clanton, Billy Claiborne, and Tom and Frank McLaury in Tombstone, Arizona.
The town was established on Goose Flats, a mesa above the Goodenough Mine. Within two years of its founding, although far distant from any other metropolitan area, Tombstone had a bowling alley, four churches, an ice house, a school, two banks, three newspapers, and an ice-cream parlor, alongside 110 saloons, 14 gambling halls, and numerous dance halls and brothels.
The narrow lot where much of the gunfight took place is now maintained as part of the O.K. Corral Historic Complex. Life-sized figures of the gunfighters are positioned using a map drawn by Wyatt Earp. As the gunfight proceeded, some of the participants fled onto Fremont Street (Arizona State Route 80). Re-enactments take place four times daily.
The route was commissioned by the Arizona Department of Transportation on September 6, 1974. [10] On September 17, 1999, SR 64 Spur was decommissioned and handed over to the airport authority for maintenance. [11] Today, the route of former SR 64 Spur is known as Corsair Drive and Flying Fortress Drive. [11] [12]
The Tombstone Historic District had ill-defined boundaries when it was first designated in 1961. The landmarked area was generally agreed to include at least the area bounded by Toughnut, Fremont, 3rd and 6th Streets, but its precise limits were a subject of continuing debate through at least 1986.
