Hofheimer's was a Norfolk, Virginia-based chain of shoe stores that was once a leading East Coast retailer. Victor Strasburger founded the company with the three Hofheimer brothers in 1885. [1] [2] it specialized in upscale men's and women's footwear, including Florsheim shoes for men.
It sought a sale of its assets, earning a stalking horse bid from Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, which recently bought a rough majority of Big Lots; it was predicted that unless JOANN found a higher bidder, Gordon Brothers would purchase the brand and begin liquidating all of its stores.
The company began on October 28, 1922, when brothers Sam, Harry, Mark, Irving, and Simon Edison—most of whom had previous experience in the shoe business working for others—opened their first shoe store, Chandler's, in Atlanta, Georgia. The store was a success and the brothers opened up a second shoe store, called Baker's, the next year.
