Pac-Man 256 is an endless runner video game developed by Hipster Whale and 3 Sprockets and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.The game is part of the Pac-Man series and is inspired by the original Pac-Man game's infamous Level 256 glitch, as well as Hipster Whale's own game Crossy Road, which previously featured a Pac-Man mode.
On 22 May 2015, Bandai Namco Entertainment and Hipster Whale announced Pac-Man 256, which featured Pac-Man trying to escape ghosts and overcome a glitch while performing the same mechanics as the 1980 video game, with the glitch based on the Level 256 glitch from the original arcade game, [8] but with upgrades and freemium purchases. This cabinet includes 6 Pac-Man Games: Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal & Pac-Mania along with 26 other non-Pac-Man Namco games. There are 3 versions of this cabinet, a Coin-Op version for Arcades, and both a Cabaret and Chill version for homes. Like Pac-Man's Arcade Party, only the home cabinets contain Ms. Pac-Man.
Legal concerns raised over who owned the game caused Ms. Pac-Man to become owned by Namco, who assisted in production of the game. Ms. Pac-Man inspired its own line of remakes, including Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness (2000), and Ms. Pac-Man: Quest for the Golden Maze, and is included in many Namco and Pac-Man collections for consoles.
The removal also included Mitchell's Pac-Man high score and first recorded perfect game: "Twin Galaxies was the original source of verification for these record titles and in line with their decision to remove all of Mr. Mitchell's records from their system, we have disqualified Mr. Mitchell as the holder of these two records."
