HCC was one of the last community colleges to be created in Florida, founded in 1968. Only Pasco–Hernando State College, out of the 28-school Florida community college system, was founded later. In January 2008 the school opened its first residence hall, Hawk's Landing, named after the school mascot.

The Florida College System, previously the Florida Community College System, is a system of 28 public community colleges and state colleges in the U.S. state of Florida.In 2020–2021, enrollment consisted of 640,183 students. [1]
All members of the NJCAA Region 8 are Division I, excluding Pasco–Hernando State College, which is in Division II. [1] The colleges athletics are collectively administered by the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA), with the exception of ASA College of Miami , which is a private institution.
