Cherry Ames is the central character in a series of 27 mystery novels with hospital settings published by Grosset & Dunlap between 1943 and 1968. Helen Wells (1910-1986) wrote volumes #1–7 and #17–27, and Julie Campbell Tatham (1908–1999), the creator of Trixie Belden, wrote volumes #8–16. Wells also created the Vicki Barr series.
The series begins with Swallows and Amazons, published in 1930. The Walker children from London, staying at a lakeside farm in the school holidays, sail a dinghy named Swallow, while the local Blackett girls, living on the opposite shore, have one named Amazon. The Walkers see themselves as explorers, while the Blacketts declare themselves pirates.
The first six books were written by Julie Campbell Tatham. [1] The following 33 titles were written by various in-house writers of Western Publishing under the pseudonym Kathryn Kenny. [1] Between 2003 and 2006, Random House republished the first fifteen books of the series with new cover art illustrated by pulp artist Michael Koelsch.
