Aston Martin implemented several incremental updates to the DB9, termed "facelifts". The first two updates—which occurred in 2008 and 2010—involved minor changes to the headlights, tail-lights, engine and interior. The most noteworthy update occurred in 2012 when Aston Martin gave the car a completely redesigned front fascia.
Aston Martin unveiled the DB9, a model initially designed by Ian Callum and completed by Henrik Fisker, at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. The second-generation "Vanquish" was introduced in 2012, this time based on Aston Martin's existing VH platform – similar to the one that underpinned the DB9. Designed by Marek Reichman and made in the Gaydon facility, the VH platform Vanquish was designed to fill the shoes of the discontinued DBS.

The DB9 was the first car to use the VH platform. The British carmaker Aston Martin developed the vertical–horizontal (VH) vehicle platform to serve as the basis of most of the mass-produced vehicles in its lineup manufactured between 2003 and 2016, [note 1] comprising the DB9, followed by the Vantage, DBS, Rapide and Vanquish.
