Each year the California Mr. Basketball award is given to the person chosen as the best high school boys basketball player in the U.S. state of California. [1] It has been awarded since 1905. [1] [2] Many have gone on to play in the NBA. Voting is done in a points system. Each voter selects first, second, and third place votes.
The boys' basketball team, which featured future NBA All-Star James Harden, was ranked first in California during the 2005–2006 season. The school won the CIF Division III championship with a record of 33 wins and a single loss. The 2006 win was the second time in the school's history that the team won the California Basketball championship.
Official governance for high school sports in this area began in 1913, when the Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Council (SCIAC) was formed. Previous to that, some individual leagues dated back to the 1890s. The first local high school football game was played at Escondido High School against San Diego High School in 1898.
