The school is named after Jo Byrns, the 41st Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, who was born and raised in Cedar Hill.
Prior to 1925, the school was located on Main Street on the property where "The Center", the recreational center in Springfield, is located. In 1925, the school moved to the former campus of Peoples-Tucker School, which had been closed.
