  2. Chains vs belts. Who wins the fight? - Big Dog Motorcycles Forum

Chain will happily embrace chain wheels down at about 3-inches in diameter, whereas belts need pulley diameters of at least 4.5-inches if they are not to begin feeling distressed. And because the countershaft pulley is big, so must the wheel pulley enlarge in order to get the appropriate final-drive ratio.

I found a Tsubaki 428-2 x 82 for $68 shipped and says it's an HD OEM replacement for H-D#40007-36B primary chains. Any idea if this will fit my 07 K9 and is it any better over the Diamond chain? AddictJ

Oct 28, 2021. #14. Well, for one, I just ordered Shinko tires and want to make sure I have room. The beauty of HD is the slow evolution of the engine family and parts off the shelf are the same from years ago. Smart. So HD wise, belt to chain is just a link away. Here is just the thought of the Shinko vs Spline. Or the analogy is the Cup vs Plate.

If that is a concern you could get one of the key chains that has two loops on it. Keep all the bike keys on the chain. Disconnect the bike key from the chain when you are riding and when you get to where you are going just snap them back together. I think you could find one for a couple bucks somewhere. Some thing like these.

The shoes will show some wear over time but are easy fixes. If the chain is still in good shape and should be, no need to replace it. Just adjust as per the O&M and you should be good. Be careful not to get the primary too tight though, if I recall right 5/8-7/8 at the tight spot. The 1/2 may be too tight.

Just as easy as my other bikes with messy chains! It is still dark outside. So, here I sit surfing the internet (Big Dogbiker forum is an absolute must) drinking coffee. Huw PS I didn't need much room around the bike and didn't follow the service manual directions to remove the rear fender, etc. Thanks for the info.
