Independent Catholic schools are Catholic primary, secondary schools or colleges that are not operated by a parish or religious order as well as own, fund, and operate themselves. Also included are such schools which seek to teach the Catholic faith but which, lacking approval of the local bishop , are not entitled to call themselves Catholic.
Most Catholic schools in the United States accept students of all religions, ethnic backgrounds, and ability, with a minority expecting students to actually be Catholic. Some Catholic schools are more relaxed in their expectation of a largely Catholic student body, due to the demographic proportion of Catholics being especially low in some areas.

Other denominations such as the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod , Evangelical Lutheran Synod , Church of the Lutheran Brethren , also have their own colleges and universities.
