Ernie Ball started producing a modern acoustic bass guitar in 1972 under the name Earthwood. Sterling Ball, Ernie's son, was an acquaintance of Fender and helped beta-test early Music Man models. A model/batch number of the form nnnnHmmmm where 'nnnn' is a batch number and 'mmmm' is a model number ('6072H950' for example would be an H950 model).
