Fred Thomas of AllMusic stated, "Though still employing electronic drums and a variety of non-acoustic instruments, the EP does offer stripped-down versions of three songs from the album, including laid-back alternate renditions of singles 'Shooting Star' and 'Good Time'."

The song was planned for inclusion on Owl City's Ocean Eyes album (2009), but it didn't make the cut. As work began on the album, The Midsummer Station (2012), Young brought a 90-second demo of the "old leftover instrumental idea" to Norwegian record producing and songwriting team Stargate, who helped complete the composition. In 2013, an acoustic version of the song was released on Owl City's The Midsummer Station - Acoustic EP. [4] "Good Time" was written by Matt Thiessen, Brian Lee, and Adam Young, [5] while production was handled by Emily Wright, Stargate, and Young. [6] According to Young, the collaboration happened to be a "happy accident". [7]
