The Paoli/Thorndale Line is the busiest regional rail line in the SEPTA system, carrying approximately 21,000 daily riders each weekday prior to the pandemic. [9] It is also among the longest in the system, stretching out into the far western suburbs of Philadelphia, and as such has express service to some of the outer stations.
The station serves several Amtrak Keystone Service trains daily, as well as all SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Line local regional rail trains. The station is 8.5 miles (13.7 km) from Suburban Station in Center City Philadelphia, and travel time to Suburban Station is 22 minutes on SEPTA local trains.
The cars are similar to those on the Media–Sharon Hill Line 100 series, SEPTA's suburban trolley routes, which were delivered around the same time. However, the subway–surface cars are single-ended and use trolley poles , while the suburban lines use double ended cars and pantographs for power collection.
The R5 line (now Paoli/Thorndale Line) originally ended further west in Parkesburg, but service was cut back to Downingtown in 1996.
