The county was disestablished by the communist government of Romania in 1950, and its territory became part of Baia Mare Region, which in turn was renamed the Maramureș Region in 1960. Satu Mare County was re-established in 1968, when Romania restored the county administrative system.

The Assumption of Mary Cathedral [1] (Romanian: Catedrala Adormirea Maicii Domnului din Baia Mare, Catedrala Sfânta Maria) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Baia Mare, Romania. The cornerstone was laid in 1905, the building completed in 1911. In 1930, the church became the cathedral of the new Romanian Catholic Diocese of Maramureș.
