The coastal line runs south from Colombo, following the Indian Ocean, with views of tropical beaches and coconut palm trees. It links the regional centres of Moratuwa, Panadura and Kalutara, and beach resorts at Aluthgama, Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa. The line continues past Galle (known for its historic, preserved Dutch fort), ending in Beliatta.
All of the narrow gauge (762 mm (2 ft 6 in)) lines have been closed. [1] The Maradana to Avissawella section of the Kelani Valley line has been converted to broad gauge (1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in)). All stations serving narrow gauge tracks have been closed with the exception of the Maradana to Avissawella section, as it was converted to broad gauge.
Maradana Station features a two-storey building housing the ticket office, waiting room, and Sri Lanka Railways offices. A footbridge leads to the platforms. [4] The main building is an example of British colonial architecture.
