History. The first gangs in Chicago were loosely organized groups of European immigrants in the late 1800s. In 1910, Big Jim Colosimo founded the Chicago Outfit on the South Side. In the early 1950s, immigration to Chicago had picked up considerably, namely to the west side and parts of the south side with many coming from Puerto Rico.
The Original Maxwell Street Market was an impromptu ghetto market established in the late 19th century by newly arrived Jewish residents from Eastern Europe. A Sunday-only affair, it was a precursor to the flea market scene in Chicago. The market was officially recognized by the city in 1912.
Damen Avenue is a street in Chicago, where it is 2000 West in the grid. It is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of State Street, the city's north–south baseline. Known as Robey Street for politician James Robey prior to 1927, it was renamed in honor of Father Arnold Damen. [ 1] However, the Robey name is retained in Harvey and Dixmoor as Robey Avenue.
