Created on December 17, 2015. Having trouble sorting alphabetically a list of words (made from various lists) because of formatting. When I try to sort (by alphabet) a list of words that I compiled in Word 2013, it won't sort properly. When I look at it in the "hidden formatting" view, there are two types of symbols by the words.

To do that, you'd have to select the field and unlink it (i.e. convert it to static text) by selecting it an pressing Cmd-Shift-F9. Only then can you change the sort order. Your bibliography lacks even the publication titles and, so, doesn't conform to APA. Regardless, the entries should be sorted alphabetically.

Hi, it is a list of medical consultants on a word document for a GP surgery. I have to sort in in alphabetical order. I have used the sort function that you are suggesting but it will not work. I have used this command successfully previously on table column. Is there a hidden setting somewhere I should check.

  6. Sort endnotes by order of appearance including cross-references

The need is for dynamic, many-to-one referencing. This is the first time I've used Word for a document like this instead of latex. Latex allows me to put many references to the same citation and orders the various sources based on appearance of first mention. I'm surprised Word wouldn't have a similar functionality. Thank you for your support.

    answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/how-to-change-order-of-endnote...

Endnotes will renumber if you reorder the corresponding endnote references in the body of the document. Note that if you want a list of references in a particular order it would be easier to create that list first and apply auto numbering to it; then use Word's cross-reference function to insert references (to paragraph numbers) in the main body of the text.

Assuming that they are listed last name first and each in a separate paragraph, select the list and use Table | Sort (they do not have to be in a table; that's just where the Sort command is). Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. I am working in MS Word 2003. I have all my sources (about 100 of them) listed by last names.

  11. How to sort a table of contents in alphabetical order?

    answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/how-to-sort-a-table-of-contents...

Replied on November 30, 2017. A table of contents is organized in page order, not in alphabetical order. You will have to unlink the TOC and then sort it. However, the standard choice if you want an alphabetical list of words would be to create an index instead. Stefan BlomMS 365 Word MVP since 2005Volunteer ModeratorMS 365, Win 11 Pro~~~Note ...
