Uttarakhand (English: / ˈ ʊ t ər ɑː k ʌ n d /, [19] / ˌ ʊ t ər ə ˈ k ʌ n d / [20] or / ˌ ʊ t ə ˈ r æ k ə n d /; [21] Hindi: [ˈʊtːərɑːkʰəɳɖ], lit. ' Northern Land '), formerly known as Uttaranchal (English: / ˌ ʊ t ə ˈ r æ n tʃ ʌ l /; the official name until 2007), [22] is a state in northern India.
Initially, it was believed that due to harsh climate and mountainous terrain, this was a barren and uninhabited land. But after various excavations and the study of ancient literature, it is now established that the history of Uttarakhand goes back to Stone Age.

Uttarakhand has a total geographic area of 53,483 km 2, of which 86% is mountainous and 65% is covered by forest. [1] Most of the northern parts of the state are part of Greater Himalaya ranges, covered by the high Himalayan peaks and glaciers, while the lower foothills were densely forested till denuded by the British log merchants and later, after independence, by forest contractors.
Uttarakhand is famous for Chota Char Dham, which means 'journey to four centers'.These four religious centers in Uttarakhand are represented by Badrinath (dedicated to Lord Vishnu), Kedarnath (dedicated to Lord Shiva), Gangotri (the holy origin of the river Ganga) and Yamunotri (the holy origin of the river Yamuna).

The Uttarakhand movement refers to the events of statehood activism within the undivided state of Uttar Pradesh which ultimately resulted in the formation of Uttarakhand, India as a separate state.
In November 2000 when Uttarakhand was created as a new state it had inherited 13 districts. As of November 2022, no new districts have been created even though other newly created states have almost doubled the number of new districts for rapid development.
