CN Rail created some early hopes with the UAC TurboTrain, in its Toronto–Montreal route during the 1960s. Halifax, like Toronto, is a provincial capital that the Trans-Canada Highway does not pass through. Beyond Truro, the highway continues east for 57 km (35 mi) to New Glasgow, where it meets Highway 106, before continuing to the Canso Causeway, which crosses the Strait of Canso onto Cape Breton Island near Port Hawkesbury.
