The 125gr. can be pushed to 1600-1700fps. In reality most of the 155gr. 40S&W tend to be in the 1150-1180fps range and those are hot 40S&W loads, while the 158gr. 357Mag loads tend to be 1200-1220fps range plus the benefit of better penetration. These are merely standard power loads and not even on the hot side.
As a complete newby I am wondering if anyone has a handgun pistol caliber chart or could at least list gun calibers from smallest to largest. I especially am confused with, for example, .380 vs .38 calibers and the magnum loads. Thanks for your patience with me! First, it's best to understand that caliber and cartridge are not the same.

J is the small one mostly chambered in .38 spec. -most commonly made in the 2" snub nosed configuration, but some are made with 3" barrels. K the medium in .38 and .357. Some are two inch snub nosed, some production models came with three inch, but cops tended to carry 4" bbl.s, or sometimes 6".

First, the Glock. The Glock 42 is a relatively new offering from Glock. It is the smallest and lightest pistol they make, and also the thinnest with the slide being only 0.9 inches wide. It fires the .380 ACP round (also called "9mm short") and has a capacity of 6+1. Functionally, it is the same as every other Glock.
I'll agree with the .500 S&W. Whether it can penetrate or not, the force of a 440 grain slug at 1600 fps will probably incapacitate someone, most likely killing them. In .44 Magnum you can get 340 grains at 1400 fps from Buffalo Bore ammo, not too bad either. Those loads are Ruger only so get a Redhawk.
A S&W .32 Safety Hammerless is about the smallest revolver I can really handle. If you had a new cylinder and top latch made out of strong steel, it would shoot a reasonable amount of .32 ACP and you could load it down to .32 S&W level for practice. All in all the smallest revolver yet in Production is the Taurus .380.
Break it down into two categories, largest for self defense against humans, and largest for self defense against wild animals (moose, bears, cougars, etc). For me Human self defense - .40 or .45 in an auto, .38 +p or .357 for revolver. Anything bigger than that and I feel you give up too much in terms of pistol size, recoil, and rate of fire.
