  2. I had a similar problem once after flying and just kept taking decongestants. When my ear continued hurting, I went to the doctor and found out that I had a bad ear infection and was close to rupturing my eardrum. If your ear is still hurting in a few days, I would suggest going to the doctor. posted by JuliaKM at 8:44 AM on January 5, 2006

Breathe in, close your mouth, pinch your nose, exhale gently. You can also try yawning. All this will open your Eustachian tubes and equalise the pressure between the middle ear and the ambient air. Since you have a cold, the tubes could be clogged up. Don't worry about stuffy ears.

  4. Everyone's head is different, so experiment with a combination of the suggestions on this page. I even have to use different techniques on each of my ears: swallowing for my right ear, yawning for the left, chewing to aid both. I personally dislike nasal sprays, because the sinuses feel worse once the medicine wears off.

After some discussion, the doc reached a finger into my mouth, where the Eustachian tubes empty into the back of the throat. She wedged her fingertips in snugly and pulled out quickly, causing a slight vacuum. The second time she pulled, my ears opened up and regained 80% of usability. Over the next day, the remaining 20% cleared up.

    1. Pour in a generous amount of vinegar and baking soda. Let it sit for a while. It will bubble up in a pleasing way. 2. After that's settled down, pour in a generous amount of Dawn or other standard (ie not "all natural" or whatever) dish soap. This will break up any fatty or oily elements of the clog.

  9. Grab your earlobe and pull it downward and outward. That can help open up the magic tubes that drain your ear. Try putting some warm olive oil in there and letting it sit for a bit, too. posted by paanta at 2:01 PM on October 23, 2008. You probably have serous otitis media (serous=watery, as opposed to pus-y).

Update after seeing ENT: yes, you can fly with an outer ear infection but you have to be sure that it's not also a middle ear infection (double infection), which is the kind that poses problems with flying.

Bring two handerchiefs or lots of tissues. +1 for mucinex...with which you need to drink plenty of water. Wearing a mask helps keep your sinuses from drying out. I would also drink enormous amounts of liquids, maybe bring some herbal tea bags so you can ask for hot water and have nice things to inhale/drink.
