"The Husband's Message" is an anonymous Old English poem, 53 lines long [1] and found only on folio 123 of the Exeter Book.The poem is cast as the private address of an unknown first-person speaker to a wife, challenging the reader to discover the speaker's identity and the nature of the conversation, the mystery of which is enhanced by a burn-hole at the beginning of the poem.
The first stanza of the poem introduces a young girl, the narrator of the poem, who describes her life through childhood imagery of playfulness and innocence. It recounts how she married her husband when they were both very young and innocent. She was shy and seemed unhappy as she didn't respond when spoken to and kept her head bowed.
For instance, in Bradstreet's "To My Dear and Loving Husband", the poem's intended audience is her husband, Simon Bradstreet.
