Phishing scams happen when you receive an email that looks like it came from a company you trust (like AOL), but is ultimately from a hacker trying to get your information. All legitimate AOL Mail will be marked as either Certified Mail , if its an official marketing email, or Official Mail , if it's an important account email.
When you open the message, you'll see the "Official Mail" banner above the details of the message. If you get a message that seems like it's from AOL, but it doesn't have those 2 indicators, and it isn't alternatively marked as AOL Certified Mail, it might be a fake email.
