Double Springs is a town in Winston County, Alabama, United States. The city is the county seat of Winston County. [ 2 ] The county seat was initially located at Houston , but by referendum in 1883, Double Springs prevailed and it was removed to there.
Winston County is a county of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,540. [2] Its county seat is Double Springs. [3] Known as Hancock County before 1858, [1] the county is named in honor of John A. Winston, the fifteenth Governor of Alabama.
The forest is headquartered in Montgomery, as are all four of Alabama's National Forests. The other National Forests in the state are Conecuh, Talladega, and Tuskegee. There are local ranger district offices located in Double Springs. The forest was established as Alabama National Forest on January 15, 1918, with 66,008 acres (267.12 km 2). [1]
House bill #264 was passed December 12, 1882 to move the county seat to Double Springs; the move was made on July 23, 1883. A 40 x 60 wooden building consisting of two stories was the court house building in Double Springs. On August 5, 1891, fire spread through this court house destroying it.
Double Springs–Winston County Airport covers an area of 65 acres (26 ha) at an elevation of 753 feet (230 m) above mean sea level.It has one runway designated 3/21 with an asphalt surface measuring 3,403 by 79 feet (1,037 x 24 m).
