The Cathedral of Saint Joseph is home to Wheeling's oldest Catholic parish, dating to 1822 and Mother Church to the city's other parishes. It has been the liturgical heart of the Diocese of Wheeling (originally) since the diocese's erection by Pope Pius IX in 1850 and is an architectural and artistic treasure in both the city and state.
During Whelan's 24-year tenure as bishop, he built 42 churches, nine schools, one orphanage, and a hospital. The first church in Charleston, Sacred Heart, was constructed in 1869. [4] By the time of his death in 1874, the Catholic population of the diocese numbered around 18,000. [5]
Sacred Heart parish was established on August 1, 1866, when Bishop Whelan, who was now Bishop of Wheeling, purchased the Dunbar property in Charleston. A two-story brick building served as a church and school. In 1869, the congregation constructed a frame church measuring 60 by 25 feet (18.3 m × 7.6 m) for $1,500.00. [2]

St. Francis Xavier Church is a historic church at 532 Market Street in Parkersburg, West Virginia. This church was built in 1869 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. [1] St. Francis Xavier is one of the four original churches of the Diocese of Wheeling. [2] St. Xavier is also the oldest church building in Parkersburg.

John Joseph Swint (December 15, 1879 – November 23, 1962) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling in West Virginia from December 1922 until his death in 1962. He was auxiliary bishop of the same diocese from May to December 1922.
