Article 1. Establishment of a Union. The States party to this Treaty (hereinafter called “the Contracting States”) constitute a Union for cooperation in the filing, searching, and examination, of applications for the protection of inventions, and for rendering special technical services.
The treaty was amended in 1979, and modified in 1984, and 2001. As of June 1, 2009, there are 141 Contracting Parties to the PCT. By simplifying patent application filing, the PCT assists innovators in obtaining patent protection throughout the world.
