The network of the Trans Canada Trail is made up of more than 400 community trails. Each trail section is developed, owned, and managed locally by trail groups, conservation authorities, and by municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal governments, for instance in parks such as Gatineau Park or along existing trails such as the Cataraqui Trail and Voyageur Hiking Trail.

The western terminus of Autoroute 40 is located at the Ontario–Quebec border, where it continues as Highway 417 towards Ottawa; the eastern terminus is in Boischatel, where it transitions into Route 138 at the end of the freeway. The portion of Autoroute 40 from the Ontario border to Autoroute 25 is part of the Trans-Canada Highway.
King's Highway 40, commonly referred to as Highway 40, is a provincially maintained highway in the southwestern portion of the Canadian province of Ontario. The 91.4-kilometre (56.8 mi) route links Chatham and Sarnia via Wallaceburg , following close to the St. Clair River .
When Ontario signed the Trans-Canada Highway Agreement on April 25, 1950, it had already chosen a Central Ontario routing via Highway 7, Highway 12, Highway 103 and Highway 69; [100] Highway 17 through the Ottawa Valley was announced as a provincially-funded secondary route of the Trans-Canada the following day. Many segments of MOM's Way are connected to the Old Dawson Trail, the first all-Canadian route between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. The roads included along the route are: Manitoba Highway 12 between the Trans-Canada Highway , 40 km (25 mi) east of Winnipeg, through Steinbach and Sprague, to the Minnesota border.
The trail was opened on 5 October 1997 on abandoned Canadian Pacific Railway right of way sections, including portions of the right-of-way of the now-defunct Grand River Railway. The two cities combined resources to purchase the property. It is a part of the Trans Canada Trail. [3] [4]
