Ackermans is a South African chain of clothing retail stores. Founded in 1916 in Wynberg , Cape Town , Ackermans has over 700 stores across Southern Africa , including in Namibia , Botswana , Lesotho , eSwatini and Zambia , [ 3 ] and is headquartered in Kuilsrivier near Cape Town .

The company was founded in 1956 by Renier van Rooyen. His first chain store opened in 1978, and was the start of PEP Reef. [6] [7] Formerly known as PEP stores the company changed its name to Pepkor Limited in 1982 and PEP stores became a subsidiary company. [1] In 1998, Pepkor acquired Australian retailer Best & Less. [8]
Raymond Ackerman purchased the first four Pick n Pay stores in Cape Town in 1967 from Jack Goldin. [4] Since then, the Group has grown to encompass stores across South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Nigeria, Eswatini and Lesotho. Pick n Pay also owns a 49% share of Zimbabwean chain TM Supermarkets. [5]
In 2006, the Ackermans donated R4 million to the hospital. Pick 'n Pay was very involved with Cape Town's bid to bring the 2004 Summer Olympics to South Africa. On 14 February 2005, the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development opened in Cape Town to develop business skills and train future managers and leaders for South Africa.
