The set of images in the MNIST database was created in 1994. Previously, NIST released two datasets: Special Database 1 (NIST Test Data I, or SD-1); and Special Database 3 (or SD-2). They were released on two CD-ROMs. SD-1 was the test set, and it contained digits written by high school students, 58,646 images written by 500 different writers.
As opposed to the IAPS, all OASIS images are in the public domain. A detailed description is provided on the first author's homepage. Other alternative databases of photographic images of scenes with various kinds of affective content include: Besançon Affective Picture Set-adult (BAPS-Adult) [20] Categorized Affective Pictures Database (CAP-D ...
The Facial Recognition Technology (FERET) database is a dataset used for facial recognition system evaluation as part of the Face Recognition Technology (FERET) program. It was first established in 1993 under a collaborative effort between Harry Wechsler at George Mason University and Jonathon Phillips at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland.
A facial expression database is a collection of images or video clips with facial expressions of a range of emotions. Well-annotated ( emotion -tagged) media content of facial behavior is essential for training, testing, and validation of algorithms for the development of expression recognition systems .

[1]A data set (or dataset) is a collection of data.In the case of tabular data, a data set corresponds to one or more database tables, where every column of a table represents a particular variable, and each row corresponds to a given record of the data set in question.
The images are in many cases chosen to represent natural or typical images that a class of processing techniques would need to deal with. Other test images are chosen because they present a range of challenges to image reconstruction algorithms, such as the reproduction of fine detail and textures, sharp transitions and edges, and uniform regions.
