Newport is a home rule-class city [6] at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking rivers in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 14,150 at the 2020 census. Historically, it was one of four county seats of Campbell County. [7] Newport is a major urban center of Northern Kentucky and is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 159 square miles (410 km 2), of which 151 square miles (390 km 2) is land and 8.1 square miles (21 km 2) (5.1%) is water. [9] It is the fourth-smallest county in Kentucky by land area and fifth-smallest by total area. It lies along the Ohio and Licking Rivers.
Between July 26 and August 1, 2022, widespread and catastrophic flooding swept through portions of eastern Kentucky, southwestern Virginia, and southern West Virginia. 45 people died from the floods. Entire homes and parts of some communities were swept away by flood waters, leading to costly damage to infrastructure in the region.
