U.S. Route 276 (US 276) is a United States highway that runs for 106.4 miles (171.2 km) from Mauldin, South Carolina to Cove Creek, North Carolina.It is known both as a busy urban highway in Greenville, South Carolina and a scenic back-road in Western North Carolina.

The highway is four lanes between Sylva and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, and two lanes beyond.Between WCU and Cashiers (about 18 miles (29 km)), the highway is a winding mountain road, and continues in this manner all the way to the South Carolina state border.

In 1971, the highway was routed along modern-day I-240 from Brevard Road to Haywood Road, a highway that was previously unnumbered. As a result, Brevard Road became unnumbered north of the freeway. Around 1981, NC 191 was moved back onto Brevard Road to end where it currently does at US 19 Business/US 23 Business The freeway became I-240. [2]

Westbound I-40/US 74 continues on to Canton and Knoxville ; eastbound I-40 provides access to nearby Biltmore Estate and further on to Hickory .

The first North Carolina Highway 192 (NC 192) was established as a new primary routing between NC 19, in Mill Spring, and US 74/NC 20, in Lake Lure. [3] In 1931, NC 192 was extended southeast from Mill Spring along new primary routing to the South Carolina state line, where it continued as SC 177 towards Spartanburg . [ 4 ]
