The 4th Tennessee Cavalry was organized at Cumberland Gap and mustered in for a three-year enlistment on February 9, 1863 at Nashville, Tennessee (TN) under the command of Colonel R. M. Edwards. Four companies were organized in Louisville, Kentucky from December 1862 through January 1863.
The 4th Tennessee Cavalry saw action at the battles of Parker's Cross Roads, Franklin, Chickamauga, and in the Atlanta Campaign. It was later separated into two regiments serving in different departments of the army, one under General Forrest and the other under General Wheeler. [ 3 ]
The 4th Ohio Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was also known as the Union Dragoons and Cincinnati Union Dragoons . Service
The 4th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry unit of the Confederate States Army in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. The 4th Regiment was formed by combining various cavalry companies into one consolidated regiment in the autumn of 1862. [ 1 ]
The regiment was Col. Robert E. Lee's last command in the U.S. Army before the American Civil War. With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, the 1st Cavalry Regiment was dissolved and reorganized. Many of its commissioned officers rose to prominence during the war, including Lee as well as George B. McClellan and J.E.B. Stuart. [3]
At Nashville on December 16, the 4th's regimental flag was captured by soldiers of the 5th Minnesota. [4] After the Confederate defeat at Nashville, the regiment retreated to Mississippi. The remnants of the 4th Regiment were then captured after the Battle of Fort Blakeley in Alabama on April 9, 1865, shortly before the final Confederate surrender.
The 4th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the Eastern Theater in a number of campaigns and battles, but perhaps is most noted for its actions in helping secure Cemetery Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg .
The 4th Maryland Infantry was organized at Baltimore, Maryland, July and August 1862 for three-years service under the command of Colonel William J. L. Nicodemus.. The regiment was attached to Kenly's Maryland Brigade, Defenses of the Upper Potomac, VIII Corps, Middle Department, to March 1863. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, VIII Corps, to June 1863.
