In 1918, the London and Provincial became Barclays Bank. [1] The interior of the bank has been much changed during its existence with a redesign by Alfred Foster in 1919 at a cost of £4,055 (equivalent to £235,379 in 2023) and other changes including the loss of the original double-height banking hall that has been reduced to one storey. [5] In August 2000, Barclays took over Woolwich PLC in a £5.4bn acquisition.
The Goslings name is perpetuated by Barclays Bank as part of the group's history, and in several practical ways. The three squirrels sign is still maintained outside the Fleet Street branch at 19 Fleet Street, and the Goslings name is still printed on cheques issued at that branch, as it has been since the 1896 merger. Barclays Bank, Market Place, Saffron Walden, Essex, England has been designated a Grade II* listed building by Historic England. It was first listed in 1972. [1] It was built in 1874 for George Stacey Gibson, sole proprietor of the Saffron Walden and North Essex Bank, and designed by William Eden Nesfield. It is now a branch of Barclays Bank. [2]
The bank was founded in 1770 by John and Henry Gurney, sons of John Gurney (1688–1741), who passed the business to Henry's son, Bartlett Gurney, in 1777. [1] The bank was founded in what is now known as Bank Plain (formerly Redwell Street).
