Bleached Chemi-ThermoMechanical Pulp (BCTMP) is a pulp product used by the paper industry as a less-expensive alternative for Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK).. BCTMP was first produced by Millar Western in 1988 in its Whitecourt Mill, and was initially used in lower grade paper applications. [1]
The most common is to use three plies with a basis weight of about 300 g/m 2. [2] The base or middle ply is normally made of pulp from bleached or unbleached chemical pulp, chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (CTMP) or broke (waste paper from a paper machine). CTMP gives more bulk and stiffness. The top ply (inside) is made of bleached chemical pulp.
In the 1980s started the commercialization of air-laid paper, which gave better bulk, porosity, strength, softness, and water absorption properties compared with normal tissue paper. Also in the 1980s started the use of superabsorbents in diapers and reduced the need for fluff pulp and is now down to 15 grams or even less.

The body of the cartridge is wound of a kraft paper of 80–120 g/m 2, which is further covered by an outer sheet of 60–80 g/m 2 with colour and printing. Candy wrapping paper and twisting paper are thin 30–40 g/m 2 kraft papers and are mostly flexo or offset printed. These papers require a good strength, with highly oriented fibers.
The United States is one of the biggest paper consumers in the world. Between 1990 and 2002, paper consumption in the United States increased from 84.9 million tons to 97.3 million tons. In 2006, there were approximately 450 paper mills in the United States, accounting for $68 billion. [1]
