The city walls of Hisarya date from the Roman Empire, when the settlement was known as Diocletianopolis. Hisarya has one of the best preserved Roman walls in Bulgaria and one of the best preserved in Europe. Their length is 2327 m, the width varies between 2.60 and 4 m, and the height reaches 12.5 m.
Founded in the 10th century, Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe for religious tourists. In 2008 alone it attracted 900,000 visitors. [1]
