The Welsh Tract, also called the Welsh Barony, was a portion of the Province of Pennsylvania, a British colony in North America (today a U.S. state), settled largely by Welsh-speaking Quakers in the late 17th century. The region is located to the west of Philadelphia.
A group of Welsh Quaker businessmen met with William Penn in London in late 1681, and secured a tract of 40,000 acres (63 square miles; 160 square kilometers) in his new colony of Pennsylvania. [1]: 26 The Welsh Tract was to be contiguous and stretch northwestward along the Schuylkill River from the outskirts of Philadelphia to Valley Forge.
It is six bays wide, has a flat roof, and a one-story porch. The annex was built in 1905, and was originally a private home. The rectangular Queen Anne-style building was purchased in 1907 by the hotel. [3] After the death of Louis Fauchère in 1893, the hotel was operated by his descendants until 1976. [4]
The Welsh Tract was to have been a separate county whose local government would use the Welsh language, since many of the settlers spoke no English. The promise however was not kept and by the 1690s the land had already been partitioned into different counties, and the Tract never gained self-government.
In 1698, Welsh farmer Robert Lloyd was deeded 400 acres (160 ha) of land near "the road leading through the Black Rocks" now known as Black Rock Road. Constructed in 1898 as an eight-room inn, Mount Airy Lodge was re-constructed in the 1950s as the Pocono's largest resort. In its heyday in the 1960s and 70's, Mount Airy had more than 890 rooms, indoor/outdoor pools, skiing, snowmobiling, ice-skating, hiking, biking, horseback riding, archery, an 18-hole golf course and paddle ball courts on over 1,000 acres of property.
Radnor Township was founded as a part of the Welsh tract. The original settlers were Welsh-speaking Quakers, led by John Roberts, in an attempt to establish a barony of Wales in Pennsylvania. [ 6 ] In about 1681, a group of Welsh Quakers met with William Penn to secure a grant of land in which they could conduct their affairs in their own language.
