Nymphaea nouchali, often known by its synonym Nymphaea stellata, or by common names blue lotus, [3] star lotus, red water lily, dwarf aquarium lily, blue water lily, blue star water lily or manel flower, is a water lily of genus Nymphaea. It is native to southern and eastern parts of Asia, and is the national flower of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The four purplish-red sepals are oblong to lanceolate. [6] The 12-20 narrowly oval petals have a rounded apex. The androecium consists of 55 red stamens. [5] The gynoecium consists of 16-21 carpels. [6] The fruit bears 1.85 mm long, and 1.6 mm wide seeds. [5] The peduncle is 116 cm long. [3] The flowers are pleasantly fragrant. [7]

The hairy water lily is an aquatic plant having erect perennial rhizomes or rootstocks that anchor it to the mud in the bottom. The rhizomes produce slender stolons . Its leave blades are round above the water and heart-shaped below 15–26(–50) cm, papery, abaxially densely pubescent.
Species of Nymphoides are sold as aquarium plants, including the "banana plant", N. aquatica and the "water snowflake", N. indica. Species native to the United States are N. cordata in the northeast and N. aquatica in the southeast. Nymphoides peltata is native to Europe and Asia, but can be found in the United States as an invasive aquatic weed.
