After the canonization of Pope Paul VI in October 2018, the school was renamed St. Paul VI Catholic High School to further honor its patron and namesake. [10] In 2020, the high school relocated to the South Riding area in Loudoun County, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. [11] The move had been planned prior to the pandemic.
St. Paul began in the fall of 1956 during a decade in which Cardinal James Francis McIntyre opened an astonishing 24 Catholic high schools. It was known then as Santa Fe Catholic High School, located in two classrooms at St. Marianne School in Pico Rivera, with 100 freshmen from the surrounding Whittier area parishes.
In September 1997, Holy Name Central Catholic High School added Grades 7 and 8. In December 2019, the Archdiocese of Worcester announced that the school would close at the end of the academic year and merge with St. Peter-Marian, creating a new school, St. Paul Diocesan Junior/Senior High School, located on the site of Holy Name. The school community asked that the school be renamed after Saint Paul, and the name was changed within the first year. [ 2 ] At first, it was a junior high school only, but after several years of renovations and adding more grades one by one each year, it finally opened as a full high school serving grades 7 through OAC in September 1987.
Previously a voluntary aided school administered by Manchester City Council, St Paul's Catholic High School converted to academy status on 1 April 2013. The school is administered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury but continues to coordinate with Manchester City Council for admissions.
