Notes: Rock Mill, Wilshaw Lane and Oldham Road, Waterloo, was built on the site of the earlier Wilshaw Mill, making use of its octagonal chimney. Rock Mill was demolished in 1971 for the construction of an Asda store. Driven by a 1250 hp triple-expansion four-cylinder engine by George Saxon, 1892. It had a 16-foot (4.9 m) geared flywheel, 18" wide.

Formerly Gidlow Mill, an integrated cotton mill, consisting of a spinning mill incorporating an engine house and a boiler house, weaving sheds, and a chimney. The main block is in polychrome brick with a Welsh slate roof, in Italianate style, with an L-shaped plan, three storeys, and a maximum length of 24 bays .
Hand-loom weaving was one of the chief industries, each cottage having a weaving shop attached and as the Industrial Revolution developed, larger mills were built. The first cotton factory was built in 1785 by Richard Battersby at Lowe Mill, a former water corn-mill. In 1822, John Pennington constructed his first power-driven mill.
