Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps and is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the United States. It is on the Southern California coast in San Diego County and is bordered by Oceanside to the south, San Clemente in Orange County to the north, Riverside County to the northeast, and Fallbrook to the east.

The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), originally designated the 17th Marine Amphibious Unit (MAU), formed at Camp Pendleton, California on 13 April 1979. The MAU was created to plan and participate in large-scale amphibious training exercises.
On 25 September 1942, the area presently known as Marine Corps Air Station, Camp Pendleton, California was designated an auxiliary landing field and served as a sub-unit of Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. [2] The airfield was 6,000 ft by 400 ft and began operating in November 1942.
The first calf native to the base was born August 1975 to a pair dubbed Adam and Eve. [11] Another pioneering bull was named Ferdinand. [12] Four calves had been born on the base by 1978. [13] By 1987, Adam had become the dominant bull bison at Camp Pendleton, with a larger harem than any of the other 25 male bison on base. [14]

The battalion is stationed at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California. Its primary weapon system is the M142 HIMARS rocket artillery launcher and the M777 lightweight howitzer. The battalion is under the command of the 11th Marine Regiment , part of the 1st Marine Division .
