Just before the start of the Civil War, Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood declared Davenport to be Iowa's first military headquarters. [11] Five camps were set up in Davenport during the war. Camp McClellan was the largest camp, on the eastern edge of the city. Thousands of Iowa troops trained here. [12]
Davenport was the first city in Iowa to receive rail service. [2] The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (CRI&P) entered the city in 1856 after the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was completed in 1856. The Christian Jipp Home & Grocery is a historic building located in the Hamburg Historic District in Davenport, Iowa, United States. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. [2] The house and grocery was individually listed on the Davenport Register of Historic Properties in 2005. [1]
It was the city's largest department store during its existence, and claimed to be Iowa's largest department store at the time of this building's construction. [5] In 1970, another Davenport department store, Peteresen Harned Von Maur, bought Parker's. They operated a budget outlet for their store here until 1974 after they closed Parker's.
