On December 20, 1984, when the district combined several farm to market roads with other ones, FM 4 was extended north to Jacksboro, replacing FM 206. [5] On February 25, 1985, an amendment to the previous request, FM 4 was extended south to then U.S. Highway 81 (now SH 81 ) at Grandview, replacing FM 208 [ 6 ] and FM 110 .
In 2010, work began on a 8.4 miles (13.5 km) stretch, dubbed the DFW Connector, between SH 121 and International Parkway. A quarter of the $1 billion project was funded by federal stimulus funds enacted under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The old route became new SH 175. On January 10, 1945, it was extended further south to near Jacksboro. On December 17, 1945, FM 454 from Bowie southwest 5 miles was cancelled and combined with SH 59. The final extension into Jacksboro was on October 1, 1968, over previous SH 24, which had been rerouted farther south.
