Pohnpei (formerly known as Ponape or Ascension, from Pohnpeian: "upon (pohn) a stone altar (pei)") is an island of the Senyavin Islands which are part of the larger Caroline Islands group. It belongs to Pohnpei State , one of the four states in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
Geologically the island terrain consists of high mountains to low coral atolls. [11] It is the largest, highest, wettest and most scenic island of the Federated States of Micronesia. Nan Madol was the ceremonial and political seat of the Saudeleur Dynasty, which united Pohnpei's estimated population of 25,000 people until about 1628. [3] Set apart between the main island of Pohnpei and Temwen Island, it was a scene of human activity as early as the first or second century AD.
