Jeremy Michael Ward (May 5, 1976 – May 25, 2003) was an American musician, best known as the sound technician and vocal operator for The Mars Volta and De Facto.
On June 10, 2008, a recording titled Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & Jeremy Michael Ward was released. It was a collaboration between the two and was recorded in 2001 before the formation of The Mars Volta. The LP consists of various ambient tracks based on field recordings in the musique concrète tradition.
Bixler-Zavala wrote "Palm Full of Crux" as a tribute to the band's co-founding member Jeremy Michael Ward. Ward died of an apparent heroin overdose on May 25, 2003, just months before the release of the band's debut album, De-Loused in the Comatorium. Bixler-Zavala wrote the track "as a lighthouse to him, wherever he is". [5]

Two songs from the album, "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)" and "Cicatriz ESP", first appeared in 2001 as the band's very first demo recordings with bassist Eva Gardner and drummer Blake Fleming; notably, the early version of "Cicatriz ESP" (then known as "Cicatrix") was slower and much shorter (4 minutes) than the album one (at 12 minutes being the longest track on the album).
