The number of cases of COVID-19 started to rise in March 2020 and many educational institutions and universities underwent closure. Most countries decided to temporarily close the educational institutions in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
As of 13 January 2025, 115 countries and territories have at least 200,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, and of them, 90 (18 out of 23 or nearly 78.3%) have at least half a million confirmed COVID-19 cases, incl. Egypt and Hungary. On 11 March 2022, the second anniversary of the day when the COVID-19 outbreak became a pandemic was commemorated.
