The San Diego County Fair began in 1880 as an agricultural fair. The location moved from place to place for several years, finally settling on the Del Mar Fairgrounds when it opened in 1936. There was no fair in 1917–18 due to World War I , 1942–45 due to World War II , and 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic .
Del Mar Arena is a 3,500-seat arena in the fairgrounds complex; and it is used for sporting events, concerts, and other special events. It was built in 1991. In 2009, it was remodeled and a roof was added. It was home of the San Diego Sockers indoor soccer team from 2009 to 2012. The Del Mar National Horse Show is hosted here.
John Gerald "Gerry" Driscoll III (1924 – March 12, 2011) was an international yachting champion and businessman from San Diego, California. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] He competed in the defense portion of four America's Cup races (1964, 1967, 1970, and 1974), and was part of the organizational effort for two others. [ 3 ]
Frontwave Arena is the first large multi-purpose indoor entertainment venue in the North County area of San Diego County. In 2022, a 10-year naming rights agreement with Oceanside-headquartered Frontwave Credit Union was announced, giving the arena its official name. [4] The arena opened on September 16, 2024 for the Gold Over America Tour. [5]
The show is the largest indoor antiques show south of San Francisco and attracts over 100 antiques dealers from across the western United States. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] During the downturn in the economy, the 2009 show had 20 percent fewer exhibitors than usual. [ 6 ]
