The Divine Mercy devotion is a Catholic devotion to the mercy of God associated with the reported apparitions of Jesus to Faustina Kowalska. [1]The Divine Mercy devotion is composed of several practices such as the Divine Mercy Sunday, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy or the Divine Mercy image, which Kowalska describes in her diary as "God's loving mercy" towards all people, especially for sinners.
As a Roman Catholic devotion, the chaplet is often said as a rosary-based prayer with the same set of rosary beads used for reciting the Rosary or the Chaplet of Holy Wounds. As an Anglican devotion , the Divine Mercy Society of the Anglican Church states that the chaplet can also be recited on Anglican prayer beads . [ 5 ]

Kowalska wrote that the purpose for the chaplet's prayers for mercy is threefold: to obtain mercy, to trust in Christ's mercy, and to show mercy to others. [ 31 ] In November 1935, Kowalska wrote the rules for a new contemplative religious congregation devoted to the Divine Mercy.
This prayer also inspired him to create a "Fruit Novena" to the Holy Spirit, [9] based on the chaplet and a quote from the Epistle to the Galatians: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law" (Galatians 5:22–23).
The Divine Mercy Sanctuary (Polish: Sanktuarium Bożego Miłosierdzia) in Kraków, Poland, is a Roman Catholic basilica dedicated to the devotion of the Divine Mercy, and is the resting place of Saint Faustina Kowalska. [1] [2] The new basilica was built between 1999 and 2002, and is located in the District of Łagiewniki at św. Faustyny street.
The words used in the Bible in Hebrew to designate mercy, including divine mercy, are rakham (Exodus 34:6; Isaiah 55:7), khanan (Deut. 4:31) and khesed (Nehemiah 9:32). [2]In the Greek of the New Testament and of the Septuagint, the word most commonly used to designate mercy, including divine mercy, is eleos.
